He received his bachelor of science in forestry in 1981 from Iowa State University. He was a forester/firefighter/EMT for Los Angeles County Fire Department until 1984 when he relocated to Austin. He applied his science background to the garden center and home-energy retrofitting businesses he managed and owned in the mid to late 1980’s.
